Celiac Press HeadlinesNational Celiac Awareness DayIn 2006, the first Celiac Disease Awareness Day Resolution was passed by the United States Senate (S.Res. 563). This bill, sponsored by Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma and co-sponsored by Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, made September 13 National Celiac Disease Awareness Day. September 13 was chosen in honor of Samuel Gee’s birthday. Samuel Gee, an English physician born in 1839, is credited with being the first person to link celiac disease and diet. In 1888, he proclaimed, “If the patient can be cured at all, it must be by means of diet.” September 13, 2009 marked the fourth annual commemoration of National Celiac Awareness Day. AACSA Foundation encourages everyone, individually and collectively, to work for increased celiac awareness every day of every year. On September 13, AACSA Foundation also encourages everyone to celebrate Samuel Gee’s insight.
